Before reading this post I remind any visitors, friend or foe, to re-read my 7 rules for Internet trash-talking to keep the comments civil. I don't want to have to moderate them but I will.

See I tried to downplay the old Blood Feud between the Avs and Wings. I really thought it was over, as I wrote yesterday, I feel it's more like the cold war where the sides have cooled. People were bitter but begrudgingly accepting the fact that this war is over. I really believed that. Well despite that restraint Red Wings bloggers decide to throw grenade's anyways.

What I hadn't counted on is that since the Blood Feud ended (with Wings victory over the Avs in '02 and the subsequent lockout, which may as well have been the Berlin Wall coming down) is that while the Avs fell into slightly better than mediocrity the Wings still viewed themselves as a superpower. They should. They have won 3 of the last 4 president's trophies. They have looked unstoppable. The regular season taste's so sweet, but obviously the flavor of the playoffs makes Red Wing's choke.

And it's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns McCarty or religion Yzerman or antipathy to people who aren't like them Claude Lemieux or anti-immigrantAvalanche sentiment or anti-trade sentiment their previous glory as a way to explain their frustrations.

You see as much as Red Wings fans hate us... they need us, Avalanche fans. Avalanche fans have moved on. Red Wings fans are making fun of us because we "think old-time hockey is 1996" but they are clinging to their hate of Mike Keene, Pierre LaCroix, and Patrick Roy. Darren McCarty? Kirk Maltby? Brendan Shannahan? That's in our history. We are much More into hating Dion Phaneuf, Chris Pronger and Stephane Villieux. We are looking towards the future. The Avs didn't bring back old irritants who can no longer play in order to relive the glory years they brought back old soldiers who can still play and lead to usher in a new set of glory years. The only thing more infuriating than unrequited love is unreciprocated hate.

But here’s something I can admit. The hatred between these two fan bases is steeped in one thing and one thing only: fear. Fear of your team losing to the other and having to live with the dark thoughts that accompany that loss.
Abel to Yzerman

What would a conquest here mean to the Red Wings? They would beat a team that has had a terrible powerplay that they have dominated over the last 4 seasons. A team that, recently, has had mild success but is no where near the elite level of their team. In other words not much. It should be just another playoff series win. Yet they realize the stakes for a loss. A loss to the Avs would be so much worse for the Wings. It would be the unequivocal end of their glory years. 3 president's trophies in 4 seasons (and tied for a 4th) and 0 Stanley Cups to show for it. As if that weren't enough the slaying of their team would be at the hands of their traditional arch-nemesis. Everything is on the line for them, and yet their rival feels free.

No pressure Wings fans, no pressure.

Update: Added "love" in a paragraph after I noticed the mistake in Greg Wyshanski's blog, which quotes mine.
