One of the most consistent criticisms that I have had over the last two seasons has been the Avs unwillingness to address their depth, or lack thereof, at the left wing position. Part of what defined my belief that the left wing position was a bit weak for the Avalanche is that I think TJ Galiardi is better suited for the third line role. Many Avs fans feel differently, that he’s really a top-6 forward....

Tweet One of the biggest reasons NHL observers felt the Avs got robbed in the Varlamov trade is that many feel the 1st rounder the Avs are giving up next season in a likely lottery pick in a deep draft. Many Avs fans, who have bought off on the trade, feel this club is vastly improved over last season’s addition. So with the new addiditons, and the added benefit of another year of maturity, let’s...

Tweet Today the Avs signed three players in free agency. A defenseman (Jan Hejda, $3.25M), a forward (Chuck Kobasew, $1.25M), and a Backup goalie (Jean-Sebastion Giguere $1.25M). All three moves I heartily approve of. But those weren’t the moves that made headlines today. The Avs, who were in the middle of the rebuild, traded a 1st & 2nd, round pick for the young, talented, and slightly injury prone, goaltender Semyon Varlomov. And the trade did...

Tweet So, believe it or not, this is my 5th Man-Meat Acquisition Article.2010200920082007In 07 The Avs followed my advice and the Avs made the playoffs. In ‘08, they didn’t and the Avs finished with the 3rd worst record in the league. In ‘09, Avs followed my advice again: & Playoffs. Last season, Sherm thought he was too good for me, and he didn’t follow my advice. Then the Avs finish with the second worst record....

Tweet The Avs had one of the busier days yesterday. They drafted at #2 and #11 and traded a key part of their team away yesterday (JM-Liles). They also re-signed Matt Hunwick for a one year deal. I thought I’d do a quick analysis. So here we go: Trade: JM-Liles to Toronto for a 2012 2nd round pick (via Boston). This deal sucks. Like really bad. Troy Brouwer was traded on the same day for...

Tweet Everyone else has a mock draft, so here’s mine for the top 14 picks#1 Edmonton Oilers - It’s rumored that Florida wants to swap picks with Edmonton and take Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Upon hearing that he potentially can spend his winters in either Edmonton or Miami, RNH immediately called Danny Heatley to get career advice. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins#2 Colorado Avalanche - After RNH there’s 4 prospects that could possibly taken here, and no consensus to the...

Tweet At the trade deadline there was a rumor that the Avs were looking to trade Paul Stastny to the Kings for one of their two goalies (either Starter Jonathon Quick or the talented backup Bernier). Now people seem to be ratchiting up this kind of proposal once again, especially with the draft going on. Read my lips: This is a dumb idea. In fact, trading Stastny for any goalie (or any goalie that a...

Tweet So how about the Stanley Cup finals, eh? The hockey has been great. Two great games, which had people thinking of the Brodeur-Roy showdown in ‘01. And not only has the hockey been great, but we’ve also been treated to some good ol-fashioned nastiness and animosity. A surreal biting incident, taunting, punches to the back of the heads of players. Really this series has had it all so far.But you know where this series...

Tweet A few weeks ago Adrian Dater, of the Denver Post, gave out his season ending grade for Matt Duchene. He gave him an A-. I found this perplexing then, and still do.  I nearly wrote this post up then, but I wanted to wait until another Avs blog, Mile High Hockey, gave out their grades. They gave Duchene and A- too. I completely disagree with A-. I’ve mentioned  this before, but I think people...
